Technical debt in software products typically results from unavailability of technology or unavailability of time.
The scenario is easy to envision: The engineer has a number of different cloud APIs available. Some require more work, some less, but all will get the job done. When an inefficient choice is made, the customer pays more in data storage, retrieval, compute, etc. Sometimes, however, it results in downright security gaps. This is the worst kind of technical debt, and one that is often not realized.
The concept is as follows: With the introduction of SSL, TLS and subsequently HTTPS, encryption has become near universal. The problem with encryption is, of course, that it also provides an invisibility shield for the attacker. When attacks and malware are encrypted, the security solutions cannot spot them.
Another way in which cryptographic debt creeps in is in legacy software. Much enterprise software becomes legacy because it “just works,” and the SSL and TLS encryption libraries are compiled directly into the software. First, evaluate whether a simple re-issuance of better certificates can mitigate the risk. This quick review can be an important first step toward identifying and prioritizing how to deal with the threat.
