Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen gets an election boost from an unexpected corner: Chinese President Xi Jinping.

In this Jan. 8, 2020, photo, Tsai Ing-wen, Taiwan's President and the 2020 presidential election candidate for the Democratic Progressive Party , chants slogans during an election campaign rally in northern Taiwan's Hsinchu province. A year ago, the Taiwan leader was on the ropes. Now President Tsai appears poised to win a second four-year term in elections this Saturday.

“All the factors that help Tsai Ing-wen are happening: the China factor, the U.S. factor and the Hong Kong protests,” pollster You Ying-lung, chairman of the Taiwan Public Opinion Foundation, said at a news conference late last month. A Tsai victory is the last thing that Xi wants, yet it was his major policy speech on Taiwan at the start of 2019 that many analysts point to as the starting point for her political recovery.

Then came the Hong Kong pro-democracy protests, which erupted in June. Tsai has repeatedly pointed to the unrest as proof that the “one country, two systems” approach pushed by China doesn’t work.
