The federal government’s new jobs plan will include “degree apprenticeship qualifications” that aim to help stop a broad decline in people signing up for trades.

Apprentices will be offered advanced courses akin to university degrees in a federal bid to double the number of young Australians learning skills in fields such as clean energy, as part of a new jobs plan that comes with a $41 million funding boost.

The new funding will include $31 million for an existing program, called TAFE Centres of Excellence, that offers money to colleges that find business and university partners to offer courses in fields such as clean energy, advanced manufacturing, and care and support.Another $10 million will go towards the “degree apprenticeships” in the hope this helps employers gain the advanced skills they need.

Australia had 377,665 apprentices and trainees undergoing training at the end of December last year, an increase of 8.1 per cent on the previous year as the country emerged from the pandemic, according to the National Centre for Vocational Education Research. The National Skills Agreement offers the states and territories an additional $4.1 billion over five years from January 2024, including a base of $3.7 billion and another $400 million to deliver Labor’s election pledge on fee-free TAFE courses for thousands of students.
