No team in Europe’s top five leagues has more points than La Liga’s surprise package this season.

MADRID: With Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid struggling for consistency and dropping valuable points in recent weeks, lowly Girona have forged ahead and sit alone at the top of the La Liga standings after a remarkable start to the campaign.

The surprise package of the season so far, Girona’s 3-0 defeat at home to Real in late September has been the only blip since they started the campaign with a 1-1 draw at Real Sociedad. After coach Michel led Rayo Vallecano and Huesca back to the top flight in previous seasons, the Girona boss is now impressing in La Liga with an attacking style that makes the most of talents like Brazilian wonderkids Savinho and Yan Couto and versatile Spanish midfielder Aleix Garcia.

His goal is to finish in the top third of the table and grab one of La Liga’s spots in next year’s European competitions.
