The Adrian Autry era of Syracuse basketball started with a win. The Orange knocked off the New Hampshire Wildcats 83-72 to start 1-0 on the season. It was not always pretty, but it was a notch in the win column. Next up for Syracuse is a matchup with Canisius on Wednesday.
It started very strong for Syracuse, who raced out to a 28-6 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game. The man to man defense was relentless, forcing turnovers and allowing the Orange to play to its strength in transition. New Hampshire, though, adjusted and took better care of the basketball. Shots started to fall and an 11-2 spurt put the Wildcats within striking distance, 44-32, at halftime. That continued into the second half as the lead was trimmed to as few as six just five minutes in. A Kyle Cuffe three, followed by a pair of Quadir Copeland free throws, provided a little more breathing room.Judah Mintz led SU with 20 points on 5-15 shooting to go along with three assists, three steals and three rebounds.
JJ Starling, Maliq Brown and Quadir Copeland rounded out the double figure scorers for the Orange. Nine players in total played at least five minutes for Syracuse in this one.Syracuse shot 41.8% from the floor overall, but just 5-21 from three point range. The defense, which turned to the zone for large stretches in the second half, forced 16 UNH turnovers. The Wildcats shot just 36.8% on the night.
