Pauline Weldon-Bowen takes legal action against NSW Police Force claiming she was discriminated against because of her race and gender, in a case her lawyer says highlights a culture of unconscious bias.
A Sydney woman has launched legal action against NSW Police claiming she was discriminated against because of her race and gender, in a case her lawyer says highlights a culture of unconscious bias in the force.A hearing was held at the NSW Civil and Administrative TribunalPauline Weldon-Bowen claims police discriminated against her when she sought help over an alleged road rage incident with a male cyclist, who she says intimidated her and damaged her car with her 18-month-old son inside.
She believes she would have been taken more seriously by police based on the video evidence she gave them on the day of the incident, if she was not an Indigenous woman accusing a white man of wrongdoing. Pauline Weldon-Bowen is suing NSW police alleging discrimination after she filmed and reported an allegation of a road rage clash with a male cyclist.
She also took a video on her phone as evidence of the cyclist's behaviour, which has been filed in the NCAT proceedings. Ms Weldon-Bowen told the constable she felt uncomfortable and asked for an Aboriginal Community Liaison Officer to be present during the interview, but he said no-one was available.
The altercation was reported separately by both Ms Weldon-Bowen and the cyclist at Redfern Police Station. "Discrimination is so hard to prove in any system, but I'm not here to win or get anything from police, but to challenge the system," Ms Weldon-Bowen said. "I dealt with [Ms Weldon-Bowen] in the same way as I dealt with any person making a complaint in those circumstances."'We think it's very common'
