Weather conditions on land and sea are competing to decide whether Sydney's CBD will finally reach 30C for the first time in nearly a year.
It was about 20C at sunrise but by 11:42am a warm northerly airstream along with summer sunshine had already sent the temperature up to 28.8C.
But a major twist in the plot then arrived, a pseudo-sea breeze across Sydney Harbour suddenly strengthened from 19 to 28 kilometres per hour, and the result was a 2.5C temperature drop in 20 minutes as cool maritime air moved inland. The rest of the afternoon will see the battle heat-up even further as Western Sydney sweats in the mid 30s and the beaches remain closer to 25.
