Sydney ranked as the third most polluted city in the world due to the remnant smoke on Thursday morning.
Sydney’s air quality was among the worst in the world on Thursday morning as smoke lingered from a number of hazard reduction burns to reduce dangerous fuel loads in bushland around the city.
Air quality monitors run by NSW Planning and Environment recorded 111.9 micrograms per cubic metre of PM2.5, fine particulate matter, at Alexandria, the highest level in the city and more than four times the level regarded as “good” air quality. By 1pm, air quality had improved over Sydney’s north and south-west, but particulate levels and visibility in Randwick remained very poor. RFS Inspector Ben Shepherd said smoke would continue to lift and disperse, and the organisation’s modelling predicted a dramatic improvement in air quality on Friday and Saturday.
