An urgent report into the crisis in Alice Springs presented to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and the NT government has recommended the reintroduction of sweeping alcohol bans.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese last week appointed Dorelle Anderson to the post giving her the immediate task of reviewing temporary alcohol restrictions.
The ban would remain in place until communities develop alcohol management plans under an opt-out arrangement. Crime in the central Australian town has soared in the past 12 months while alcohol fuelled presentations to emergency rooms has spiked by 50 per cent. “I’m not suggesting that it be forever so I am glad that it does quote the alcohol management plans and I think it is a step in the right direction for central Australia."
