'It’s no secret that mental health resources have been gutted nationwide by federal and local governments, but what’s less obvious is how psychiatric treatment can operate like the prison system in disguise.' –TyraBosnic
As terrifying as being hospitalized was, what I feared even more was the aftermath. I spent weeks at a time in psychiatric units, which meant I missed entire lesson plans from my high school classes. I was regularly at risk of failing because I couldn’t keep up with my assignments, and the anxiety was compounded by the surreal experience of trying to reintegrate with normal society. On the units, we were holed up in a hospital wing and often spent most of our time in isolation.
“It [the psychiatric unit] is not always the best place to go for help, which is very sad because it’s becomeplace to go for help,” Kaufman says, explaining that factors like being low-income and lacking robust transitional care make hospitalization the only solution to the social and economic ills plaguing patients.
Instead, we need to create a system that gives people power over their own treatment, and we can take some notes from police accountability initiatives. Liat Ben-Moshe, PhD, an assistant professor at University of Illinois who's been studying the intersections of abolition and ableism for the last 15 years, points to the"Their goal is that citizens are going to be in charge of police, but not as a citizens review board.
Ben-Moshe adds that this means questioning the definition of treatment itself. Rather than pathologizing people, we should be asking: "What do you need? What are your desires? What will make you safe? What will make you fulfilled?"
