Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said it was extraordinary that the deputy opposition leader had refused to delete her social media post.

Deputy Opposition Leader Sussan Ley is standing by a social media post urging voters to “send Labor a message” at Saturday’s byelection in Dunkley if they’re concerned with keeping women safe from “foreign criminals”.within hours once Victoria Police realised it was a case of mistaken identity, Ley’s post to social media site X remains online.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said it was “extraordinary” that Ley had refused to delete her post while Education Minister Jason Clare said the late Labor MP Peta Murphy, whosepanel on Friday, Ley stood by the post. “Jason’s home affairs minister said every one of those individuals who is being let out, those hardened criminals, should be locked up … As a woman, I am not taking a backwards step on this, and I’m calling it out,” Ley said.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday with Labor’s Dunkley candidate, Jodie Belyea, at Jubilee Park Stadium in Frankston, Albanese said the “political game-playing … reflects badly on where the Liberal Party have gotten to in 2024”. Criminal activity in Frankston has been a Coalition talking point during campaigning in Dunkley – which Labor holds by a 6.3 per cent margin – with Dutton telling Nine’sprogram that Victoria Police were burdened by applying resources to the 149 released detainees.
