A total of 2,253 kilogrammes of suspected cocaine was seized from a cargo vessel off the south-east coast of Ireland
The suspected cocaine seized when the Army Ranger Wing captured the MV Matthew in a daring operation off the Cork coast on Tuesday may worth up to €500 million, it has emerged.
“Cocaine that comes in to Ireland is cut so that value of 157 million would be increased.” And Gerry Harrahill, a senior customs official, added: “The value could be trebled. It is open to speculation.” The Commissioner also said he believed the “murderous” south American cartel that sent the drugs to Ireland as well as the gangs involved in planning to sell it here and in Europe had suffered a massive blow with the seizure.
He added: “This is a hugely significant operation and it shows our unrelenting determination to disrupt and dismantle networks which are determined to bring drugs into our country And he paid tribute to the gardai, military personnel and revenue officials involved in the operation.
