Police arrested a suspected arsonist Tuesday in connection with a late-night fire that left St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church damaged and temporarily shuttered, authorities said.

Flames are seen billowing Monday night from the back of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church on Main Street after a fire broke out inside the structure.

Less than four months ago, Watsonville Police officers arrested Melgoza on suspicion of setting Ave Maria Memorial Chapel on fire, according to a department post to social media. A review of superior court files showed no related charges filed by the Santa Cruz County District Attorney’s Office against Melgoza related to the earlier fire.

Firefighters were called Monday at 10:12 p.m. to the 721 Main St. structure, located prominently at the city’s northern gateway, after a passerby reported smoke issuing from the church. The Watsonville Fire Department soon updated its response to a more significant two-alarm fire, as those arriving on the scene reported “heavy fire involvement” at the church and that a forced entry would be required to fight the blaze.
