Former national security adviser Susan Rice said President Trump was right to walk away from negotiations with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un

Joining Rice in praising the president's decision was Sen. Chris Coons , a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, who said he was happy Trump showed restraint and did not offer too many concessions to the reclusive dictator.

“I'm grateful the president didn't take a dangerous step of giving away our military strength on a weak deal,” Coons said. “I think it's a good thing that he walked away rather than doing something that was wrong.”Kim’s claim that the North Korean leader did not know about the treatment of American student Otto Warmbier, who died shortly after being released from North Korean custody.

Rice, on NPR, said there is still hope for future negotiations, adding that the North’s fervent desire for sanctions relief revealed the U.S. had leverage going forward. But Coons said he was concerned the discussions would stall instead of leading to more collaboration among policy experts from both sides.

“We need to stop with the reality TV summits and move towards real and serious diplomacy with North Korea,” the senator said.
