The project is mooted by Mahathir who also revived the 'Look East' policy.

A survey by statistics platform"OK ke Malaysia?" showed the majority of the respondents do not agree with the Pakatan Harapan government's third national car project.

Those who agreed with the project outlined several reasons for doing so, namely that the third national car project aims for the international market, encourage competition and give more option to people to choose national cars, and the knowledge spillover impact in the engineering field which would create more job opportunities for Malaysians.

"If these two entities are not optimised, these respondents are sceptical that the third national car project would exceed the existing capability," said Resilienca Consulting Sdn Bhd, the company behind the survey, in a statement. It said more thorough research needs to be done to justify the project, while the government has to take the people's perceptions into consideration.
