Here's what to expect for temperatures as summer ends and fall begins. Outlook for the next three months:
August is expected to be hot from parts of the Plains into the Midwest and Northeast.Warmer than average temperatures might grip parts of the northern tier in October.
An area from the Rockies to the Plains, Midwest and Northeast is predicted to see temperatures that are the most above average from August through October, according to an outlook from The Weather Company, an IBM Business, and Atmospheric G2. Most other locations, including the Southeast and Southwest, are forecast to see temperatures near or slightly above average.
"The combination of a strong La Niña base state, historically-strong persistence and ongoing/building drought across the western/central U.S. suggest a hot August is a slam dunk," said Todd Crawford, director of meteorology at Atmospheric G2. Heading into October, the expectation is that above average temperatures will grip an area from the Northern and Central Rockies into the Midwest and Northeast. Crawford cites this as a typical weather pattern seen when La Niña conditions are present in the equatorial Pacific Ocean as they are now.
