Lawyer says court must consider the reputation of Terengganu’s Sultanah Nur Zahirah in her libel suit against Sarawak Report editor Clare Rewcastle Brown.
Terengganu’s Sultanah Nur Zahirah is appealing against the dismissal by the High Court of her libel suit against Sarawak Report editor Clare Rewcastle Brown and two others.
“She is a former Raja Permaisuri Agong, the chancellor of two universities, and involved in charity work,” he said in his submission on the quantum of damages to be awarded if the defendants are found liable. Lawyer Americk Sidhu, who appeared for Rewcastle Brown, publisher Chong Ton Sin and printer Vinlin Press Sdn Bhd, said the sultanah was only entitled to a nominal sum in damages should the court find in her favour.
“A mistake does not imply that the impugned passage is defamatory,” he said, adding that then judicial commissioner Lee Kien How @ Johan Abdullah had come to the right finding when dismissing the suit. The impugned statement read: “ was also friendly with a key player in Terengganu, the wife of the sultan, whose acquiescence was needed to set up the fund and he later cited her support as having been crucial to his obtaining the advisory position.”
