In new guidance, WHO specifically recommends against the use of non-sugar sweeteners (NSS) for controlling body weight or lowering the risk of non-communicable diseases.
World Health Organization In new guidance, the WHO specifically recommended against the use of non-sugar sweeteners for the purposes of"Replacing free sugars with NSS does not help with weight control in the long term," said Francesco Branca, WHO’s director for nutrition and food safety in Geneva, Switzerland, in a press release on May 15 announcing the new report.
"People should reduce the sweetness of the diet altogether, starting early in life, to improve their health," Branca advised. The recommendation applies to"all synthetic and naturally occurring or modified non-nutritive sweeteners that are not classified as sugars found in manufactured foods and beverages, or sold on their own to be added to foods and beverages by consumers," per the press release.
