Peter Friedman and David Rasche tell VF about their Succession double act, Karl’s A-plus eviscerations of Tom and Kendall, and the Frank line so brutal it was cut from the show.
Friedman admits that Frank has a softer approach, especially toward Kendall, who is Frank’s godson. In “Honeymoon States,” Frank and Kendall share a tender moment after Kendall discovers that his father, at one point at least, named him as his Waystar successor. Frank insists to Kendall that his father did love him. But when Kendall suggests taking over the company, Frank seems dubious.
“As somebody who’s watched him grow up, I’m worried,” says Friedman, speaking from Frank’s point of view. “This kid is very troubled. I want to support him. But it saddens me to watch him strive so hard and achieve so little in terms of what I can see. It hurts.” Frank did lose it on the kids once, the actors reveal, in an uncharacteristic burn that was cut from season three’s finale. After Kendall, Shiv, and Roman realize that Logan has sidestepped their coup attempt by siding with their mother, Caroline , thanks to a tip-off by Tom, Roman approaches Gerri to plead for help. She tells him that helping the siblings is not in her self-interest. In the script, though, Roman additionally pleaded with Karl and Frank, who were also in the room.
Friedman mentions another cut scene from season three, during which Frank’s house was raided by the FBI. A script described Frank being in an opulent bedroom with a woman in his bed. That seemed promising—the woman in his bed and the bedroom opulence, not the FBI raid—“but then it was gone,” says Friedman.
“There were other clues,” volunteers Rasche. “Logan said to Frank, in the second or third season, ‘You’re mashed potatoes.’ And Frank agrees. So we have that.”“Then in ‘Boar on the Floor,’” Rasche continues, recalling the humiliating hazing game Logan subjected his character to in season two, “Logan threatens to expose Karl’s sex life.”
