Succession director Mark Mylod goes in-depth on “Connor's Wedding,” breaking down the mechanics and technical tricks that went into capturing the death of Logan Roy.

series, breaking down the mechanics and technical tricks that went into capturing the death of Logan Roy.

Mylod describes the decision to have Logan’s death and Connor’s wedding intersect as a “bait and switch,” upending and misdirecting the audience’s expectations for the main event of the episode. “Onwe really like to mess up weddings,” he adds.

“We went to the most extremes there to isolate the siblings on a boat at a wedding and to put Logan at 35,000 feet,” Mylod says. Tom , who delivers the grim news about Logan to Shiv and her siblings, was actually speaking through the phone during the scene even though he wasn’t physically on set. “Matthew was actually back with his family in London at the time, but spent literally all day attached to the phone, going through that again and again to feed the actors,” Mylod says.

“We did a bunch of sound tests on the phone to make sure it would come through just the right amount,” he continues. "You could understand what he was saying, but also have that slight frustration, of just having to lean in to understand exactly what was going on—to put the audience into the siblings’ experience as much as possible to parachute them into their skins.”

Mylod highlights the extraordinary performances of the actors during the episode, revealing that there was an internal debate in the edit bay as to how much time to spend on the plane with Logan versus on the boat with the Roy children. “The initial idea was, Maybe we’ll just stay on the boat the whole time. But when we did shoot, Matthew was just so damn compelling that really murked up the argument,” Mylod says.
