He was recently shocked by what he found in waterways near the former Sunny Corner gold mine on the state's Central Tablelands, which appeared to be crystal clear until he tested samples back in the lab. "It was like the periodic table — cadmium, nickel, lead, copper, arsenic. I've never seen so many hazardous metals at such high concentrations," Dr Wright said. The Western Sydney University water researcher said he measured arsenic 550 times the permissible level at Sunny Corner, while lead and cadmium were both 48 times the recommended level.
He believed the heavy metals had leached out of the former mine site, which has been shut for more than a century. "There's very little life in the waterways around Sunny Corner and it's really hard for the ecosystem if there are no animals to eat," Dr Wright said.Dr Wright is among about 200 individuals, community groups, and companies who have lodged submissions to a NSW parliamentary inquiry. He said the old Sunny Corner mine should serve as a warning.
