3.0-litres of flat-six, four driven wheels, five seats and six manual gears - name a better PH family car.
Those in the market right now for something even vaguely fast and interesting for £5k have every right to be a little despondent. What was recently a safe price point for a glut of PH-worthy buys can now feel like the bottom of the barrel. Hopefully, things won't remain this way forever, because it’s making car shopping on a budget a lot less enjoyable than it used to be...looks like one of them.
The Spec B wasn’t just a big-engined flagship for the Legacy saloon and estate range, but we'd be remiss not to mention what’s under the bonnet. Because in a display of incredible commitment to the cause, the firm decided its flat-four tradition should also extend to a six-cylinder flagship. And so the 3.0 R got itself half a dozen horizontally opposed cylinders, for 245hp, 219lb ft, and a soundtrack far more like a Porsche 911 than would have even been expected from a four-door saloon.
As well as a memorable engine, the ‘B’ in Spec B meant there were Bilstein bits, which was a worthwhile upgrade for Subaru’s bigger saloon. It didn’t make the 3.0 R into a grown-up Impreza, even with a rear limited-slip diff for the four-wheel drive, but it was surely better for the Bilsteins.
Indeed, there’s plenty to be encouraged by here: the ad is honest and full of detail, the pictures are nice, the spec is good - including a double sunroof, Bluetooth, and climate control - and the Legacy’s condition must be above average. We’ve definitely all seen Subarus with many fewer miles than this that aren’t turned out this well. There are niggles to fix, yes, but nothing critical. And better to go into ownership knowing them than discovering them in a couple of months.
A 3.0 R has never been cheap to run - an official average of 23.7mpg wasn’t great even in the mid-2000s - though this 55-plated car will at least benefit from the more affordable tax bracket. Then all you’ll need is one more person who has any idea what a Spec B is when the time comes, and it’ll be no bother to sell again, either.
