Comm Datuk Seri Azri Ahmad stressed the importance of police adhering to standard operating procedures (SOPs) for lockup management to prevent custodial deaths.

Bukit Aman ’s Integrity and Standard Compliance Department director, Comm Datuk Seri Azri Ahmad, stated that police must strictly follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) for lockup management to minimize custodial deaths . He emphasized that personnel responsible for managing and investigating detainees must adhere to existing SOPs to prevent any incidents. Last year, 25 deaths in police custody were reported, mostly involving drug addicts with underlying health issues.

Some causes remain pending as laboratory analyses are ongoing. Comm Azri noted a significant decline in custodial deaths since the establishment of the Criminal Investigation Unit on Deaths in Custody under his department’s purview in 2022. This unit handles investigations independently of district police headquarters (IPD) or lockups. Previously, custodial death cases were investigated by local officers. He highlighted a decrease from 33 deaths in 2020, 46 in 2021, and 22 in 2022 to 25 in 2023, although 2024 saw an increase to 28 cases compared to the previous year’s 25
