The Prime Directive became even more important.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT ACaptain Christopher Pike's actions in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' premiere prompted Starfleet to change the nature of General Order One, and the Prime Directive was born. As Captain of the USS Enterprise, Christopher Pike has to make a lot of tough decisions on the fly, often relying on his gut instincts and personal views of right and wrong.

The goal of the Prime Directive is to prevent Starfleet Officers from interfering in alien cultures, especially those that have not yet achieved space travel. Starfleet Captains are ordered to avoid revealing themselves to primitive cultures at all costs, even if that means sacrificing their own lives or the lives of their crew.

Because of the confidential nature of the USS Discovery's actions, Pike is not openly reprimanded for his violation of General Order One. However, Admiral Robert April , informs him that Starfleet has now doubled down on the importance of General Order One and renamed it the Prime Directive. Despite Pike's protests that the name will "never stick," the Prime Directive has become Starfleet's most important rule by the time of Star Trek: The Original Series.

Starfleet Learned The Prime Directive From The Vulcans As early as 1957, the Vulcan High Command had a protocol of non-interference that Vulcans must avoid contaminating alien cultures at all costs. The Vulcans also waited to initiate first contact with an alien culture until they had developed warp drive, a policy Starfleet ended up following. In the earliest days of Starfleet before the establishment of the Federation, tensions between Vulcans and humans were high.

In Strange New Worlds' premiere, Lt. Spock is quick to remind Captain Pike and his crew that the Vulcans were the ones who "invented First Contact." Without missing a beat, Pike quips: "As they never fail to remind us." Still, as the Vulcans have been exploring space and initiating first contacts far longer than humans, it makes sense that they would set many of the precedents for space exploration.
