Strake Jesuit bursts onto Houston ice hockey scene in inaugural season

That team burst onto the local hockey scene in its inaugural season of 2021-2022, finishing as the top of the 11-team ISHL regular season standings. After the approval process addition of ice hockey — the formal process took two years, but there had been informal interest and inquires going on for several years — Strake Jesuit’s athletic director Mike Crowley asked Jeff Kipp, the school’s strength and conditioning coach, to be the team’s head coach.

“As soon as he heard that there was going to be a hockey team here, he made a direct line to Mr. Crowley’s office and asked to be a part of the program,” Kipp recalled about Kubus. The Crusaders’ first game was on Oct. 8, against the Memorial West Whalers Hockey Club. Saratotsev had grown up playing hockey since he was two years old and had been playing on travel teams throughout his childhood as his family moved from Florida to Louisiana to Houston.

On March 4, Strake Jesuit beat Cinco Ranch 4-1 to finish the ISHL regular season with a perfect 20-0 record. For Kipp, a special memory is the Nov. 19 game against Cy Woods that was tied 1-1 before Higgins scored the game-winning goal with 40 seconds left in the third period.the reaction by the Strake Jesuit Education Television announcers whom he described as “going absolutely ballistic.”After beating the Pearland/Friendswood team in the South Division semifinals of the ISHL playoffs, Strake Jesuit lost 5-1 to Ridge Point, a team it had beat twice in the regular season, in the division finals.

The win over Allen in the first game of the TAHA championships was enough for Strake Jesuit to qualify for USA Hockey’s High School Division one tournament due to there being an extra bid available because the national championship tournament was being held in Texas.
