KOTA KINABALU: A pontoon at a popular dive site near Pulau Gaya and Pulau Sapi off the city here sunk due to strong waves during a storm.
The Borneo Reef World pontoon sunk to the bottom of the sea, and the operators informed marine police of the incident around 6.45am on Saturday .According to marine police, they had advised the operators to lodge a report with city police for insurance purposes.
The site is one the popular dive sites in the cluster of Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park islands, drawing hundreds of tourists daily. Over the last 48 hours since midnight on Thursday , Sabah has been hit by strong winds and heavy rain that damaged houses. However, meteorologists expect the weather to improve over the next 24 hours.
A jetty at Mabul island, another popular tourist spot on Sabah’s east coast, also collapsed on Friday amid the bad weather. The storm uprooted hundreds of trees across the west coast of Sabah, as well as causing power disruptions in the state.Meanwhile, the air quality, which had remained moderate over most of Sabah, saw Tawau district recording an unhealthy 126 Air Pollutant Index reading early Saturday .
