The Falcons, behind a one-hit and nine-strikeout effort from junior lefty Gabriel Cook, secured the District 29-6A championship with an 8-0 victory over O’Connor on Friday at Northside Baseball Field No. 2.
“We knew we deserved it, and we had to come out here and we wanted to get it against O’Connor,” senior catcher Mateo Lara said. “We didn’t want to win it the next two games , and we wanted to win it against another good team in district.” “When you give up a hit, it’s nothing really that big,” said Cook, who improved to 10-0. “We were already up, so there was no pressure on me. I was just doing my thing.”“He’s a dog,” Lara said of Cook. “That’s all I can say. He’s a dog. He knows how to go through adversity and focus back up and get the next batter.”
“I went up there and I knew what I was going to do and I just manifested it,” Lara said of his double in the left center gap that scored Brashers and Jose Becerra.Stevens belted 11 hits. Jordan Owns, Isaac Lopez and Jaiden Lopez also had two hits apiece.Brashers scored from first after a throwing error to make it 2-0 in the third inning.
