A Supreme Court jury has found Steven Walker-Ely guilty of murdering Birdsall Fa'apepele.A beloved family man and talented rugby league player with a bright future ahead of him is how Birdsall Fa'apepele's family remembers him.
Walker-Ely, who resided at "The Park" at the time, told the court Mr Fa'apepele pinned him down and tried to rape him in his caravan, so he stabbed the victim in the chest.Instead, Walker-Ely followed the victim with his knife, pursuing him over a two-metre fence, across the four-lane highway, and along the road.
"The 42 stab wounds, the awfulness of those, in fact, overwhelmingly demonstrated that what happened here was a loss of self-control," Mr Holt said.In court, Ms Prouse and Mr Fa'apepele's younger siblings, Tapu and Sharmagne, described "Birdy" as a family man who was "full of life". In sentencing the accused to a life sentence, Justice Graeme Crow described Walker-Ely's brutal attack as "truly horrendous".Outside court, Mr Fa'apepele's younger brother, Lalo, paid tribute to his sibling.
