Steve Fisher, architect of San Diego State's revival, takes in Final Four as father figure
Retired coach Steve Fisher , who rebuilt San Diego State's program, is in Houston to support the Aztecs and longtime assistant Brian Dutcher in the Final Four as well as his son Mark , an assistant coach battling ALS.Steve Fisher held court Friday at the Final Four practices as a proud father, in more ways than one.
Fisher on Friday recalled passing out tickets for three to four years to try to get people to come to Aztecs games.Suffice to say, things have come a long way since then. San Diego State regularly sells out its home games now and the program is riding high with its first Final Four berth this week. “To say I’m surprised, I’m not going to say that. You have to get lucky to get here and we’ve had a great, great season with a bit of luck in the tournament and we’re here. We’re good enough to be here on Monday .”
He turned the reins over to longtime assistant Brian Dutcher, who was with Fisher during his long run at Michigan and later at San Diego State.
