While the coach and GM Rafael Stone hardly envision championship contention in 2023, they...
When able to watch, Rockets coach Stephen Silas saw his young team experience a lot of growing pains during a 20-62 season.Demands and expectations will change. Rockets coach Stephen Silas’ patience, as much as it has been tested and strengthened far more than seemed possible, will not be as substantial.
This season, the priority was on growth, and both believed the Rockets delivered that. Jalen Green’s ascension to NBA Rookie of the Month for March and April was a clear indication of that after a rocky start to his first season as the presumed face of the franchise and a future star. The growth of fellow rookies Alperen Sengun and Josh Christopher as well as fledgling point guard Kevin Porter Jr. was nearly as apparent.
On the day Silas and Stone completed their exit interviews with players, having met with the veterans Sunday and the younger players Monday, it was unclear how or when the Rockets will improve beyond the expected growth from one season to the next and the help that will come from the draft picks. The Rockets have their own pick, to be among the top five, and the Nets’ pick, which can range from 13 to 18, depending on play-in results.
Stone was similarly noncommittal about using his mid-level exception this offseason, a move that could eat into the enormous amount of cap room the Rockets would have in 2023 when John Wall and other veterans come off the books.
