Nationals Senate leader Bridget McKenzie has backed in a push from fellow Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price to hold a royal commission into Indigenous child sexual abuse.

However, the motion as voted down 31 votes to 26.Appearing on Sky News Australia on Wednesday, the Nationals Senate leader expressed her disappointment at the outcome.

“We put billions of dollars into closing the gap and into programs that are supposed to address sexual abuse of children in Indigenous communities.Ms McKenzie then clarified she was not saying the previous Coalition “got it right” either and urged Labor to “step up” and support the idea. “But Caleb, the reason we know this is because there have been 22 reports and commissions into child abuse and neglect in Indigenous communities since the Bringing Them Home Report in 1997.Ms Price shared her disappointment after the motion was rejected.
