If you'll be at the Texas Gulf Coast for the Fourth of July, beware the power of rip currents. They can kill. That's the message public safety officials, beach town leaders and the National Weather Service are trying to put out loud and clear.often in nearly perpendicular fashion. Rip currents typically are 50 to 100 feet wide and can extend 100 yards or more offshore.
Think of them as a treadmill carrying water — and possibly you — away from dry land. They can be found at almost any beach, even when surf conditions and the weather are calm. Their natural function is to carry sand and marine organisms out to sea.Extremely powerful. They can travel as past as 8 feet per second according to the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration.
Don't be fooled if the weather is idyllic and the surf appears calm. Rip currents can form even in tranquil conditions.
