PETALING JAYA: There was a slight increase in the labour force and its participation rate last year, statistics show.

According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia, the labour force increased by 2% to nearly 15.3 million workers compared with 2017.

“This shows that the country’s economy is still operating at full employment that is below 4.0%,” the report stated. Meanwhile, there were about 7.09 million of those who are of working age but were outside the workforce in 2018. MTUC secretary-general J. Solomon said the current minimum wage of RM1,100 was “woefully inadequate” and urged the government to fulfil its pledge of increasing the minimum wage.“There must be action, passion and most importantly, the political will to bring lost dignity back to the workers,” he said in his Labour Day message.
