Fire season is under way with blazes across the country and total fire bans in place in parts of WA, South Australia, Victoria and NSW.
Total fire bans are in place for parts of NSW, WA, Victoria and South Australia after a record breaking start to October.Strong winds, combined with intense heat, are making conditions more severe.
One home has been destroyed as crews continue to battle 220 bush and grass fires ignited in area on Sunday. Country Fire Authority Chief Officer Jason Heffernan said the next 24 hours would be challenging with wild winds associated with a cold front set to make conditions more difficult.He said the cause of the fires was being investigated, but many were burn-offs reignited by the conditions.
Briagolong resident Bob Saunders and his wife escaped the blaze on Sunday just before their mudbrick home was destroyed by fire."If you've got to evacuate just get out because I think if I'd slept in half an hour, 40 minutes I don't think I'd be here now," Saunders told 7 News.
