State Sen. John Whitmire led his Democratic primary challenger, emergency room nurse Molly Cook, with 62 percent of the early voting and mail-in ballot returns on Tuesday, positioning him to continue his long tenure in the Texas Senate.

Whitmire also insisted that he would be fully focused on the 2023 legislative session, even with the mayoral race looming later that year. He dipped into his $11 million campaign war chest, built up over years of lackluster competition, to outspend Cook by roughly a 3-to-1 margin.
