Revere Schmidt of Santa Fe Christian opts not to compete in CIF or state races this month
Santa Fe Christian’s Revere Schmidt, the defending state and section Division V cross country champion, has decided she will not run in Saturday’s San Diego Section championships at Balboa Park.“I was accepted to the Sweepstakes race at Mt. SAC but I started to notice something nagging in my leg a bit,” Schmidt said Tuesday via text. “I chose to skip that race and the recent Coastal League Championships.“After weighing the pros and cons of competing in CIF, I’ve made the decision not to compete.
Schmidt was on top of the cross country world a year ago when she won the section title by 12 seconds, clocking 17:51.4 over the 3-mile course at Balboa Park. At the state meet, she pulled away from the pack with a mile remaining and never was challenged, winning the Division V crown by 11 seconds in 18:19.1 over the Woodward Park 3-mile course.
A multisport athlete who also competes in water polo and is a highly successful swimmer, Schmidt parlayed those talents and recently turned to competing in triathlons, capturing the women’s division of the Mission Bay Sprint Triathlon, finishing ninth overall.
