Startup Arris, incubated in the personal shop of ex-Autodesk CEO Carl Bass, comes out of stealth with a new way of manufacturing composite parts and $10 million in funding

His hope was to come up with a new process that would combine the benefits of carbon fiber with those of molded plastics by optimizing the alignment of the fibers within the part.and its technology out of stealth with a presentation at the Rapid + TCT trade show in Detroit.

Eskowitz believed that by coming up with a new way of aligning the composite fibers using a new high-speed manufacturing process — which he calls in a patent— he could solve that problem, allowing automakers and consumer products companies to incorporate it into a wider variety of products from car parts to mobile phones.

Soon after, Escowitz brought on his cofounders Riley Reese, 30, a former colleague and cofounder of Arevo, and Erick Davidson, 44, a mechanical engineer who'd worked on a variety of startups. Then, a friend introduced him to Carl Bass, the former CEO of Autodesk. Bass became an early investor and adviser to the company, and Escowitz moved the startup into Bass's personal shop in Berkeley.
