Brenda Frese’s team lost two first-round WNBA draft picks, but the Terrapins stressed at their annual media day Thursday that they still have high expectations.

Guard Shyanne Sellers will be a key player for Coach Brenda Frese and Maryland this season. Across 21 years and 563 wins at Maryland, Brenda Frese has watched 16 graduates of her program get drafted into the WNBA, not to mention the several high-profile players who have transferred to other schools in this era of frequent movement in college athletics.

“There’s a huge responsibility on Shy’s shoulders this season, and this is something she’s asked for throughout her entire career,” Frese said. “She’s been waiting in the shadows and has watched from some tremendous talent in front of her.”Part of Sellers’s added responsibilities will include more time at point guard. The Aurora, Ohio, native accounted for 23 percent of the Terps’ assists last season, even without serving as the team’s primary ballhandler.

Meanwhile, Brown-Turner is one of four fifth-year players on the Terps’ roster, along with returners Brinae Alexander, Lavender Briggs and Faith Masonius. Brown-Turner, an Oxon Hill, Md., native who attended Bishop McNamara, started 123 games for N.C. State, averaging 10.3 points and 4.2 rebounds. The guard is returning home after helping the Wolfpack

One of the early standouts from this year’s six-player freshman class is another local product: McDonald’s all-American Riley Nelson, a native of Clarksburg, Md., who attended Bullis.Freshmen had a hard time cracking Frese’s rotation last season: None played more than 9.3 minutes a game, and three of them — Gia Cooke, Mila Reynolds and Ava Sciolla — have since transferred out of the program.
