Reports have indicated that Damon Lindelof's script for Star Wars' New Jedi Order movie would have repeated some of the sequels' biggest mistakes.
It seems Lucasfilm might have dodged a bullet with Damon Lindelof's recent Star Wars exit. Originally slated to pen the script for Star Wars' upcoming movie focused on the New Jedi Order and the return as Rey Skywalker, it seems as though Lindelof's original concepts would have risked repeating similar problems from the sequel trilogy. As such, perhaps it's for the best that the upcoming movie from director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is headed in a different direction.
Daisy Ridley was on stage at Star Wars Celebration 2023 to confirm her return as Rey in conjunction with the official New Jedi Order movie announcement. It certainly seems Lucasfilm wanted Ridley back despite Lindelof's script and had already been negotiating with the actress. To that end, it very well could have been the primary sticking point resulting in the creative differences and mutual parting of ways between Lindelof and Lucasfilm.
Additionally, the idea of setting the upcoming New Jedi Order movie so long after The Rise of Skywalker suggests there would be even less recognizable characters and events to tether the movie to. While it was perhaps thought that the distance would allow for fresh storytelling without any continuity hangups, there's no reason that that couldn't still be achieved with the confirmed 15-year gap.
