Released in 2021, Star Trek: Year Five #18 – written by Jim McCann, illustrated by Angel Hernandez – confirms that the first human colony was founded there by Zephram Cochrane, the human inventor of warp drive. Over centuries, the colonists adapted to the planet's native atmosphere, evolving away from baseline humans.
Centuries Made a Big Difference for the Centaurans Outside the television series', there were many references to the Centaurans over the years in ancillary Star Trek books, games, and tech manuals, with some sources even positioning them as one of the five founding worlds of the United Federation of Planets. The connection between Zephram Cochrane and the Centaurans goes as far back as The Original Series, where the episode that introduced Cochrane referred to him as "of Alpha Centauri.
The early years of humanity's space expansion remain an exciting, though underexplored era in the franchise's timeline. Films such as Star Trek: First Contact, as well as the television show Enterprise, provided tantalizing glimpses of how humans became an interstellar species.
A first season Enterprise episode, “Terra Nova,” depicted an early attempt at settling deep space which ended in disaster, indicating that this period in the pre-Federation, pre-Starfleet history of Earth's space exploration likely contains as many failures as it did successes, as in the case of the Centaurans.
