Stanford’s streak of surviving NCAA Tournament elimination games ended Monday.

Stanford's Tommy Troy, center left, and assistant coach Steve Rodriguez, center right, walk toward the rest of the team after their loss to Tennessee and their elimination from the NCAA College World Series in Omaha, Neb., Monday, June 19, 2023. OMAHA, Neb. — Quinn Mathews’ slow, solemn stroll to the dugout conveyed the vibe of Stanford’s latest frustrating trip to the College World Series.

Stanford absorbed its sixth loss in seven CWS games over the past three years. Last season, the Cardinal departed after getting outscored 23-4 in losses to Arkansas and Auburn. This time, they squandered an eighth-inning lead Saturday against top-ranked Wake Forest before letting Monday’s four-run edge evaporate.

Stanford players seemed frozen after the final out, standing in the dugout with their arms draped over the railing. They eventually convened in left field, where head coach David Esquer spoke only briefly, fully aware of the emotions in play. Tennessee then scored once on an infield groundout before Burke scored on a wild pitch by Stanford reliever Brandt Pancer.
