Afterwards, people in my class confronted me. Some voiced a religious objection to my"lifestyle," while others expressed their personal disagreement on how"we" were pursuing"special rights." While it was a civil conversation, I was floored — it was clear that some of my future colleagues saw homosexuality as a choice and one that did not fit with"God's plan for me.

That's partly why it was so jarring to absorb what my medical school classmates had to say. But I am aware that these experiences are not unique, and countless others have experienced discrimination centered on who they are. Back home in Latin America, I was the one of many. In the US, I was a unicorn, the token Latina that was often included in a picture to show"diversity" but excluded from leadership position or considered"less competent" because of my ethnicity and looks.
