Stalled talks more than a year in the making between West Coast port workers and a group representing dozens of cargo companies could deliver the latest blow to the nation's supply chains.

In a release on Friday the union, which represents 22,000 workers at 29 West Coast ports, argued during the pandemic its workers risked -- and in some cases, lost -- their lives to keep supply chains moving. The union said as ocean carriers and maritime companies made historic profits, the percentage of union member wages and benefits dropped by comparison.

The NRF renewed its call this week following the recent disruptions. Acting Secretary of Labor Julie Su, whose previous roles include California's labor secretary, has also encouraged the two sides to come to an agreement.
