Slow out of the chute, St. Augustine sped the game up midway through the first quarter and raced to an 85-53 win over Montgomery on Saturday night before a standing-room-only, loud-and-crazy crowd of more than 3,000 at Cathedral Catholic High to claim its second straight San Diego Section Open Division boys championship.
“This is one is different because we made history,” said St. Augustine senior Jurian Dixon, last season’s San Diego Section Player of the year. “We made history tonight — first to go back-to-back in the Open Division.The Saints used a 9-0 run to overcome a 9-3 first-quarter deficit. Then went on an 11-0 run that ran into the second quarter to go up by 12.
St. Augustine led by 15 after three quarters and outscored Montgomery 28-11 in the fourth quarter as 10 Saints scored.Lolo Rudolph finished with 17 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds. “We knew Montgomery couldn’t handle our defense, our trap. We prepared well, and dominated in the paint.”Ian de la Rosa and Vincent Ricchiuti added 12 points each for the Saints. De la Rosa had nine rebounds and Ricchiuti had seven.Bailes finished with eight points, making all four of his free throws.
