The temporary waiver ends March 31 next year, says Sri Lankan foreign minister Ali Sabry.
The move to exempt nationals from the six countries from paying the visa fee is to achieve the target of five million tourists in Sri Lanka annually, its foreign minister said.
MOSCOW: The Sri Lankan government has temporarily waived visa fees for tourists from seven countries, including Malaysia, Russia, and China. “The Cabinet approves issuing of free visas to India, China, Russia, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia and Thailand with immediate effect as a pilot project till March 31,” Sri Lankan foreign minister Ali Sabry said on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.
Earlier this month, the country’s tourism minister Harin Fernando said Sri Lanka intended to eliminate visa fees for tourists from China, Russia, India, Thailand and Indonesia. He said that the main objective behind the move was to attract more tourists from these countries and achieve the target of five million tourists in Sri Lanka annually over the next few years.
