Spy Bill: NCOP decides not to strengthen oversight over spooks

The National Council of Provinces' ad hoc committee decided not to heed several serious concerns about the General Intelligence Laws Amendment Bill , allowing several proposals to strengthen the bill's oversight over the intelligence services to fall by the wayside.

On Monday, the committee resolved to make only two minor technical changes to the bill passed by the National Assembly. The first is the provision for a deputy chairperson of the Joint Standing Committee on Intelligence , the parliamentary committee that oversees the intelligence services, typically behind closed doors.
