Sochan was well aware that Popovich had called him fearless after his 10-point, seven-rebound, two-assist, one-block 30-minute outing in Friday’s win over Milwaukee. While some rookies would have been thrilled to hear such praise, Sochan took it in stride.
And he’s doing it rather well, averaging just 2.3 fouls per game whether pestering the likes of Denver’s Michael Porter Jr. and Bones Hyland, a potent offensive duo, or muscling up against Memphis’ Steve Adams and the Bucks’ Bobby Portis Jr. Said Spurs center Jakob Poeltl, “We have put him on tough assignments, on some of the best guys. They are a little bigger, more physical, but Jeremy can pick them up full court and stuff. He is doing a lot of really challenging things out there considering it is his first year and he is just getting started. Hats off to him.”“He just knows where to be, he’s aggressive, in the right positions,” Poeltl said. “And he just plays hard. That is one of the biggest things on defense.
“It’s trying to focus on the present and not think of something that has just happened or what I am trying to do next play or something,” Sochan said. “Staying in the moment, it’s the best way to play.”
