Rassie Erasmus has confirmed that the Springboks have already identified who will come in as a replacement for injured wing Makazole Mapimpi.
On Monday, the Springboks issued an injury report, with director of rugby Rassie Erasmus reporting that wing Makazole Mapimpi would return home after suffering a tournament-ending injury in the match and that they would announce a replacement in the next few days.
“We are sad for Mapimpi,” said Erasmus. “He fractured his eye socket and cheek bone, so he’ll be out for four to six weeks. We’ll miss him as a player and what he brings to the team off the field. But if we get to the final, we’ll fly him and Malcolm Marx back .”It’s worth remembering that the Springboks don’t have a wing among the ‘standby’ players, and will probably feel they have enough cover in that position.
An assessment could be made to determine how far Lukhanyo Am is away from being fully recovered from a knee injury, while Lood de Jager could be another option if deemed healthy enough.Early exits: Prepare for a Rugby World Cup travesty!– currently lead Pool B with 15 points, although they’ve played one more match than Ireland and Scotland , with those teams yet to face one another in their final pool match on Saturday, 7 October.
