): The idea of breaking up San Diego Unified is not new. It was a bad idea then and it is still a bad idea. Urban schools are difficult for a variety of reasons that splitting the district doesn’t resolve. Poverty, lack of English speaking, gangs and lack of parental involvement are not changed by splitting up the district. Also, district size allows curriculum and special education leadership not found in smaller districts and it makes a difference.

I do, however, have a problem with board leadership. The requiring of college entrance courses has the effect of pushing kids out of high school and into the school to prison pipeline. This poor policy is particularly bad in light of the successful research on high school career academies. They graduate 90 percent of their students with all of them achieving an employable skill.
