Marvel's previews for several upcoming comics seemingly combine to spoil the current Spider-Man Ben Reilly's new name and costume, as Peter Parker reclaims his title. The change may no longer be a surprise, but it's still pretty exciting for fans.
Marvel has recently revealed a preview of the upcoming issue of Amazing Spider-Man #93, by Zeb Wells and Patrick Gleason, the conclusion to the long-running “Beyond” storyline that has seen Ben Reilly take over the role from Peter Parker. With “Beyond” coming to an end, and Peter Parker fighting to take back the wall-crawler mantle, Marvel has been teasing a new identity for Ben Reilly going forward. An identity that Marvel seems to have blatantly spoiled in their preview for issue #93.
Ben Reilly is a character created by Gerry Conway and Ross Andru that first appeared in 1974 before returning in the 1990s as part of the infamous “Clone Saga”. A clone of Peter Parker, Ben Reilly has served as both the hero Scarlet Spider and taken on the role of Spider-Man intermittently.
It would make sense for Marvel to have Ben to give up the identity of Spider-Man in favor of the Anti-Venom symbiote. “Beyond” has slowly been building up the return of Peter Parker and the preview itself confirms that Marvel has plans to continue Ben’s story after Peter returns to the red-and-blues.
Despite Marvel seemingly spoiling Spider-Man’s new identity in its preview for Amazing Spider-Man #93, readers looking to see if Ben Reilly will indeed become the new Anti-Venom will have to make sure to pick up the issue on March 23rd. .
